Collecting Data By Using Modern Technologies

Development in information technology is accelerating day after day glutting the world with varieties of equipment and technological equipment that can be used to implement various programmes. From that point of stance and since the 1993-Census, the Census Administration was considering finding new methodologies capable of providing highly accurate and data and jump over efforts and time wasting process such as data entry. Hence the first attempt was the introduction of scanners, OMRs and ICRs, which will help in curbing the lost time and efforts in data entry although this process does cost a lot due to low size of the Sultanate’s population. However, the idea was dismissed due to inadequacy of printing presses that could print the questionnaire forms locally at that time, whereat the scanning technology was still recent, and also due to some other potential invulnerable technical difficulties.  In stead, portable computers (laptop) were considered a suitable alternative but the idea was also dropped due to its high cost. Meanwhile, the handheld devices have proved successful results upon application in various fields of which are specific statistical surveys conducted by specialized institutions. Furthermore, some companies utilized HHD to supervise the distribution of their products. Also the Directorate General of Economic Statistics of the Ministry of National Economy has utilized the device in CPI studies. Due to all these precedence, the Census Administration has considered using the device in the 2003 Census project.
