Term Definition
Bathroom

The bathroom is the room assigned for bathing purposes, and classified as follows:

Equipped If the housing unit has a bathroom provided with piped running water connected to a drainage system.

Unequipped The housing unit has a bathroom not provided with piped running water but water sourced by some other means, notwithstanding that the bathroom is connected to a drainage system.

Not Available The housing unit has no specific bathroom.

Building

A building is defined as any independent structure fixed on the ground, temporarily or permanently, regardless of the material used in its construction. This building should have one or more entrances each of which will lead to all its components. The building must be occupied, or housing any kind of economic or other activity or should – at least – be prepared for that purpose even it is unoccupied. Therefore, the building may be an edifice, a villa, an Arabic house, or improvised housing units (Sandaqa or Areesh), or a tent. It may also be a school, a hospital, a factory, a mosque, a hotel, a ministry, a government department or others.

Can Read and Write

Is a person capable of both reading and writing but does not hold an academic certificate of any kind.

Census

The population census is the largest statistical operation of the country. It consists of a number of stages and steps that result in a total enumeration of all the living individuals within specified borders at a specific period of time, particularly to register their count, geographic distribution and their various characteristics. The housing census, however, is a process collateral to the population census aiming at obtaining the number, distribution and characteristics of existing housing units.

Current Main Occupation

Is the type of work carried out by an employed individual such as a pediatrician, farmer, primary level teacher, accountant, architectural engineer, office boy, watchman, broadcaster, male barber (hair dresser), sales manager, shopkeeper... etc.

Current Place of Regular Residence

It is the Wilayat (or country) where the individual spends most of the year or intends to do so if he/she moved to it recently.

Apart from this definition, every individual of the household members available abroad at the time of census will be counted with his/her family irrespective of his/her absence.

Economic Activity

Is the economic field or sector where the individual is practicing his/her current main occupation.

Employed

The employed is an individual (male or female), ten years old (or above), who practiced work of economic value, for at least one hour, during the week preceding the night of the reference time, regardless whether the work performed was inside or outside the housing units, for the individual or in a project owned by a member of the household, or for others. The individual is also considered as employed even if he/she did not engage in productive work during that week of reference time, if he/she satisfied the following conditions:

a. Already works for others, but he/she did not practice this work because of a holiday, ailment or difficult circumstances.

b. Originally self-employed (i.e. working for himself/herself or an employer), but did not practice the work due to difficult circumstances or because of the nature of the work itself. For example, the farmer who has prepared his land, sown it, and is waiting for harvest shall be considered as employed, provided that he/she is not looking for work during that period. This is also applicable to the household members who permanently work with him. However, the housewife is excluded, because she should not be considered as an employed person unless she was engaged actually in work during the reference week.

Employment Status

This refers to the situation in which an individual practices his/her occupation within a specific economic activity.

  1. Employer: A person who operates his/her own economic enterprise or engages independently in a profession or trade and hires one or more waged employees, in cash or kind, even if those were some of his/her household members.

  2. Own Account Worker: A person working in his/her own establishment or independently in a profession or trade, provided that he/she does not employ a waged worker. However, his/her status will not be changed if he/she employed a non-paid household member. In case he/she pays a wage for the household member he/she shall then be considered as an employer.

  3. Employee: A person working for others, whether an individual, public or private establishment, for a wage (cash or nominal) which is paid on a periodic basis (daily, weekly, monthly...) or according to a piece-rate basis.

  4. Unpaid Worker: A person who is working in a household enterprise or a project of another household, without receiving a specified salary.

Establishment

An establishment is a permanent building (or part of it) constructed particularly for some economic activity or is designed for that purpose. The establishment may be any of the following: a plant (or factory), shop, or services office. It may also be a school, a mosque, an institutional housing unit, a government department, a police station, a Wali's Office… etc.

Agriculture possessions were not classified as establishments unless they were livestock breeding farms or poultry or agricultural service providers mainly for the purpose of making profit. Constructions such as animal pens, vehicle garages, public parks, watch kiosks and public car parks (apart from pay-machine-controlled parking areas) were not classified as establishments unless they were built for the purpose of making profit. However, central public markets for selling fish, vegetables and fruits were classified as one establishment unless vendors operating in these markets were assigned separate and independent areas for each vendor. In this case each area will be considered as an independent establishment.

Head of Household

The head of the household is a member of the household who is considered to be its head. This is not necessarily the eldest member or the one who earns the highest income, or a specific sex (male or female). Also he/she should not necessarily be a relative of some or all of the household members, but it is necessary that he/she should be a mature adult and included among its members at the time of enumeration.

House Work Attendant

This applies to everyone (male or female) whose activities are limited to domestic work inside the housing unit.

Housing Unit

A housing unit is a building or part of a building which was originally prepared to accommodate a single family even if it was occupied by more than one during the census time, or was primarily unoccupied. The housing unit must have one or more entrances that enable its occupants to enter without passing through another house.

Thus, the housing unit may be a villa, an apartment, an Arabic house, a rural house, an improvised housing unit or a tent. It may also be an institutional housing unit like a hotel, a university campus, a labour camp or any similar group residence.

For the purpose of the census, every physically occupied construction at the time of the census taking will be considered a housing unit, even if it was not primarily built for the purpose of residence, such as a shop used for work and residence.

Illiterate

Is a person (male or female) 10 years of age or above, yet can not in any language write or read simple statement on his daily life course formed of few words and figures. Nonetheless, a person who can only read but not write is considered an illiterate too.

Income Recipient

Is an individual able to work but does not fall within the above categories and who is living on revenues from rent, invested money, donations from others or supported by his/her relatives.
