What is Census ?

The Census of Population, Housing and Establishments aims to provide an accurate measure of the number of people in the Sultanate of Oman on Census Night, their key characteristics, and the dwellings in which they live.

Most countries including Oman usually conducts Census every ten years. The last census was conducted in 2003. However, due to a GCC agreement to harmonise the Census among all 6 countries. The next Census will be conducted on 4th April, 2010.

 

Census History in Oman

  1. The First Census:  The Government of the Sultanate of Oman carried out its first general census of population, housing and establishments on the first of December 1993.
  2. The second Census: The second population, housing and establishments' census was conducted on the seventh of December 2003.
  3. The Third Census:  The Sultanate of Oman will conduct its third general census of population, housing and establishments with the reference period of midnight of the third and fourth of April 2010, concurrently with the unified-census of the (GCC) states.

 

Why is Census Needed?

The Census provides a snapshot of the nation, which helps define who we are. It is crucial to communities, private institutions and all levels of government in the planning of services and facilities. Only a census can provide such complete detail. The census is not, however, an end in itself! Rather the results are essential tools for effective policy, planning and decision making purposes.

At national level current population statistics are essential for planning the provision of health care, education, employment, etc. Regional figures are critical for determining regional policy and for the operation of regional developments.
 

What will be covered in the 2010 Census?

The Census shall cover the total territory of the Sultanate of Oman with all its buildings, housing units, establishments, households, individuals, Omani and expatriates.

 

Will my personal information be shared with other agencies?

No. The Census Administration is legally bound to protect the privacy of individuals and institutions and cannot give identifiable information to any third party.

The confidentiality of your data is protected by Article 8 of the Statistical Act issued by Royal Decree (29/2001). The Act ensures that data is not provided to anyone where that data can be used to identify an individual. All Census staff, including temporary employees are legally bound never to release personal information outside the Census Administration.
 

Is it Compulsory?

Ultimately, yes. Under article 6 of The Royal Decree 29/2001 - The Statistical Law, All government units, private entities and individuals shall be obliged to cooperate and faithfully provide all the data requested by the Directorate General of Census or the government unit.
